In a previous post I mentioned that torrenting can be used for good and not just evil… and these next few sites show the good side of torrenting!

There is a new web site called LegalTorrents and it is a BitTorrent search engine designed to distribute Creative Commons-licensed content. Each torrent submitted to LegalTorrents is reviewed by moderators for the proper licensing and then posted to the site. Additionally, LegalTorrents hosts a high-speed seed for each torrent, guaranteeing that you should always be able to get fairly high-speed transfers. LegalTorrent’s biggest hurdle is populating the site with content people want, but as more artists embrace BitTorrent as a distribution platform, LegalTorrents may be worth keeping an eye on (and may help you avoid getting caught downloading copyrighted material).

Another new torrent site is ImageShack’s torrent site which is famous for its picture hosting capabilities. Downloading torrent files with ImageShack will essentially be a two-step process.

Step 1: You download the torrent files onto the ImageShack server;
Step 2: When the download is complete, ImageShack gives you a simple http link to the file, so you can download it to your local machine.

ImageShack is hoping that users will benefit from the use of their servers, especially the users that have experienced ISP limiting/throttling of torrent traffic. There has been overwhelming response to their new torrent service.

And one last note to mention is the newly created program called Headweb. Headweb offers over 500 authorized and Digital Rights Management(DRM)-free movies, which can be downloaded via BitTorrent. The downloaded movies can be played with any media player, and are free of DRM. On top of that, the download manager comes with a built in DVD-burner so you can burn the movies onto a disk and play them with any standalone DVD-player. One of the interesting things about the service is that it rewards people who share their purchases. That is, people get credits for sharing the downloaded files with other Headweb users. True to the BitTorrent philosophy, sharing is rewarded.

Then again, if you don’t feel like sticking to sites like LegalTorrents, ImageShack, and Headweb there are other ways to protect your downloading privacy…
